Applied Micro Circuits Corporation (ticker: AMCC, exchange: NASDAQ Global Market (.O)) News Release - 19-Apr-2004

AMCC Ships High Performance SATA RAID Controllers for Digital Content Storage Systems

3ware 9000 Series RAID Controllers Substantially Outperform
Competition in RAID 5 Sequential Reads and Writes -- Ideal for All
Video and High Throughput Applications
LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 19, 2004-- Applied Micro Circuits Corporation (AMCC) (Nasdaq:AMCC), today announced the availability of the new 3ware 9000 Series of hardware RAID controllers. The 3ware 9000 Series enables a completely new class of SATA RAID storage solutions for all rich-media content servers. The new controllers are available now in 12, 8, and 4-port configurations worldwide. The 3ware 9000 Series will be on display at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) April 19 - 22 at the Las Vegas Convention Center in booth SL3059.

AMCC recently announced the acquisition of 3ware to extend the company's presence in the storage market. AMCC also purchased JNI in October of 2003. The company's expanding storage product portfolio now includes SATA controllers and Fibre Channel host bus adapters to broaden the company's market opportunity into NAS, DAS, and SAN storage applications.

Rich-media applications require sustained performance and ultra-high capacities for storing and distributing data-intensive digital media files including HDTV, movies, voice, graphics, high-resolution images, and audio. The AMCC 3ware 9000 Series enables OEMs, VARs, and system integrators to build cost-effective, high performance solutions for on-demand systems in the broadcast, entertainment, production, content, and delivery markets.

"Content-on-demand systems depend on reliable storage, high read and write speeds, scalability and expansive capacities," said Barbara Murphy, Vice President of Marketing at AMCC Storage Business Unit. "The 3ware 9000 is designed to meet the needs of high throughput-dependent RAID implementations while dramatically lowering the cost/performance ratio. And, our hardware RAID controllers also provide advanced RAID tools and features for greater data protection, serving, and ease of system configuration and management."

The new family of SATA controllers, based on the company's innovative StorSwitch(TM) switched RAID architecture, provides up to 3.6 TB of fault tolerant storage per controller and deliver in excess of 400 Mbytes per second sequential RAID 5 reads(a) and over 110 Mbytes per second RAID 5 sequential writes. 3ware's advanced hardware RAID architecture features an on-board processor and an integrated RAID ASIC that offloads RAID controller functions from the host CPU, dedicating the server processing to its core applications and enhancing overall system performance. AMCC combines the affordability of SATA drives with best-of-breed technology addressing the entire RAID spectrum of capacity, feature-set, and performance.

Designed to support the next generation of 64 bit computing applications, the new controllers support single arrays of up to 3.6 TB via 64 bit LBA's on one controller. The 3ware 9000 Series platform is designed from the ground up to protect the customer's investment in RAID by offering field upgradeable added value such as On-line capacity expansion (OCE)(b), RAID level Migration(b), Battery Backup and enclosure management services via an integrated I2C bus. The remote management software, 3ware Disk Manager 2 (3DM(R)2) and the Command Line Interface tool simplify storage configuration and management securely and remotely.

AMCC also offers the 3ware 9000 Series controllers with Multi-lane Internal (MI) connectors for high capacity industrial environments. This innovative design increases reliability, and simplifies installation and routing via an innovative cabling solution for large-scale configurations. The 3ware 9500 Multi-lane controllers include a highly reliable, locking cable/connector system that combines 4 SATA ports into one on the controller side. 12-port configurations feature 3 integrated connectors and an 8-port configuration offers 2 integrated connectors.
